PSL for arkfall

[Vash was getting use to his life in the city. Some of it has been pretty bad, but for the most part he really can't complain. He always had enough to eat. He had stopped pouring sand out of his clothing. Could have all the water and shower for however long he wanted. No one had tried to shoot him in months. The people here even didn't care about his scars. In fact some people really liked them!

He was currently without a dominate, but he didn't mind. A small grace period to find another one and he wasn't in a rush. Which is why he was taking a moment to enjoy a bit of people watching in the Down. Munching on a donut and enjoying the day.

The only problem was in times like these his mind tends to wander to thoughts of home. Worry starts to settle in. Hoping that his friends were alright without him. Things certainly looking good when he left. Of course, there wasn't much he could do for them here so he tries not to think too much about it.

Besides, this donut was really tasty. Right now he just wanted to sit and enjoy them. Nothing bad could happen on this day, right?]

I have snack in the cupboard. Feel free to use those. [For such a tall, skinny man Vash can have a sweet tooth. There will be a variety of chips, instant popcorn, M&Ms, and other bits of chocolate for Knives to pick from.

Vash will head back to bed to get comfortable.]

[Knives chooses the M&Ms because they made a nice substitute for different color chips. He brings the bag back to his room.]

These will work. [He says, as he holds up the bag and moves to sit on the other side of his bed again.] We can use them to make out bets.

Have you ever played before? [He shuffles the cards.] Or do you know the basics?

I know it's a game of lying.

Bluffing. It's a game of bluffing! [He corrects with a light bit of laughter.] Here. We'll do a couple hands face up until you get a feel of how to play.

[He deals them each two cards face up.] To start this is all we see. These two cards. We need to start bidding how much money we want to bid in the hope of winning! See how your cards are both diamonds? That's a really good start! We'll be flipping five cards and you just need three of them to also be diamonds.

Where I just have a heart and club. I'm going to need to hope I get some matching numbers instead. But if you can get five diamonds then you'll beat me if I do able to get matching numbers.

Actually... get me a piece of paper? I'll write down what beats what for you.

[Knives gets the pen and paper and hands them over to his brother.]

Then the lying comes in because I will pretend to have all diamonds even if I don't?

Yes and no. [As he explains Vash writes down the different hands that could come up. Starting with the royal flush at the top down to a pair down at the bottom.] The bluffing comes in when you want to try to make me give you as much money as you can get from me. Maybe you want me to think you have a really bad hand and I have a good hand. Because if I think I have a hand that can beat you I'll bet more money and you'll win more.

Of course the opposite is true too. You might not have anything at all and can't win, but if you make me THINK you have something really good and I give up then you win because I surrendered!

It takes a bit of time to learn when someone has something good or when they're bluffing. You have to look at the cards on the table. Bid too much too soon and you might not get all your diamonds and loose. Bid too little at the start then bid a lot at the end then people will know you got a card you needed and they might figure out what hand your hiding. If they don't meet your bet then you won't win very much!

But you're pretty smart. I think you'll get the hang of it in no time. [Yes; he intends that to be a genuine compliment.]

I'm doomed. [Knives deadpans.] I've never been able to get you to think the way I want you to think. I may as well give you all of my candies now.

[But still, he settles in to play the game now that he knows the rules.]

I am pretty stubborn! [Vash starts off a bit cocky. Once they get through a few face up hands and he thinks his brother has the basic understanding he starts playing for keeps. Part of it is just him being a little petty. It was fun to be better at something than Knives even if it was just a game of cards.

He also starts snacking on his winnings. Feeling he has plenty to spare. That is until he starts to lose a couple hands. That's fine. Can't win them all. Sometimes you're just dealt a bad hand.

Then he starts to lose more. Knives starts folding when he should and pressing Vash when he has something good. Well. This wasn't going the way he wanted it to anymore.

Very suddenly and without warning Vash will look "surprised". Pointing directly behind Knives.] What's that over there?!

Yeah, I'm not falling for that. [Knives says as he casually takes the pile of candies he just won and adds it to his growing amount.]

Falling for what? I didn't know you liked that sort of thing over there. [There is literally nothing, but Vash is going down with this ship that is on fire.] Might give me an idea later.

Mm-hm. Whatever those ideas are leave me out of them.

[Damn! Oh! He knows!] Hey, I'm actually a bit thirsty. Could you get me a drink please?

Yes. [When he stands he scoops up all of his candies to take them with him though.]

Wha--?! [No! His master plan that he so very easily disguised!!!] You could leave those! It wasn't like I was going to steal-- Uh! I mean you'll have an easier time carrying a glass if you leave them here!

[Knives considers him and places the candies down.]

You realize that we both know the exact number in that pile, don't you?

Uh... no you don't? [Crap! Vash hadn't considered that his brother would be keeping count of his candy!!!]

[Knives raises his brow at that.]

I'll be back with your drink. What do you want?

Water is fine. [You know what? Screw it. Brazenly, like the wanted criminal he is, Vash will reach forward while Knives is still clearly looking at him to steal some of the more 'valuable' M&Ms that he has.]

[When he comes back he hands over the water and considers his pile of chocolates.

After a moment he chuckles and shakes his head.]

Vash, if you want some M&Ms just eat them.

[He scoots over more of his pile to his brother.]

Maybe I will! [Vash tries to put in a: I'm superior and you can't tell me what to do tone, but he just can't. It breaks off into a snicker as he reaches towards the pile and grabs handful which vanishes into his mouth.]

You're actually pretty good at this game. Although I was going easy on you of course. Maybe we should get a chess board or some other games around the apartment.

[Knives smiles despite himself. It's a small expression, but there. Playing games with his brother actually sounds a lot of fun.]

We should. It would give us a way to pass the time while we figure out how to escape.

[Vash as smiles when he sees that small expression on his twin's face. As angry as his brother mad him and hurt him in the past it gave Vash hope to see him smiling like that again.]

Have you ever played gin rummy before? [It's a struggle not to comment on that small hint of a smile that he saw, but Vash was afraid that if he did it would vanish.]

That sounds like a drink. Are you sure it's a game you can play?

[Vash laughs lightly.] I'm sure, but drinking gin while playing would be a lot of fun! [He adds the jokers to the deck and starts to shuffle.]

This game is about making pairs and runs. You know the royal flush from the last game? Same sort of concept, but we're holding ten cards and working to make the best possible hand we can until we know for sure we can beat the other person. When you think you have the highest points you can you yell: GIN!
