museunboxing | Bad End Part 6 - Never let the pain stop

Things only continue to get worse. Vash continues to spiral and loose himself the more the mind breaking continues. The mages continue to use Cyril like he's nothing but a toy to use and throw away. Yet, any chance they have to have together the love Vash and Cyril share together stays strong. For now that remains unbroken. With every day only getting worse that will continue to be challenged.

Cyril tries to look Vash in the eye. He may be disappointed by the way Vash's eyes drift to the side towards Cyril's shoulder. He tries to do it slowly and not draw attention to it, but as he's looking for it, it will be easy for Cyril to spot.

"Fully? He couldn't stop himself from being captured before."

"And neither could I."

"I know. That's why as long as you're here, I am too. You cannot be trusted to protect them alone."

It strings. Knowing it's true. "It's fine. If you don't want to patrol together you can just say so."

"I don't want you to leave the boys out of your sight unless they're with someone who can better protect them."

"Cyril can protect them better than I can." Cyril wouldn't hesitate when choices have to be made.

Knives's eyes narrow. "Because he has imitated our power?"

Vash is quiet for a long moment. Maybe he's not going to answer.

Finally he speaks. "Because he will do everything he can for his kids without hesitating. I..." Maybe he wouldn't maybe he would do anything to keep the boys safe.

He hears the phantom echo of the gunfire in the cave. The memory of how strong Roderick's blood smelled mixed with gunpowder make his stomach lurch. How he faltered and failed to snap Titus's neck when it was in his grasp.

"I would."

Knives sneers slightly. Vash can feel his irritation rising. "Because you still refuse to do what's needed to protect your family...

I think it was a mistake to be here. We should return to the safety of home."

"You promised. You said no one would take my family from me again. Leaving would mean taking me away from Cyril and like it or not, he's family."

Knives makes a face. "Then we take him too."

"Don't you dare!" Vash snaps in such an angry panic that the boys suddenly pick up how upset he is. Going silent and watching the older twins in confusion.

"This all started because you took Cyril and gave the two of us to your wolves. Stop trying to ruin his life because of me!"

"This started because you are too weak to protect the people you claim to care about," Knives counters. "Too weak to do what's necessary to keep them safe. You always have been."

It's easy to snap back in defence of Cyril and his kids. It's harder when the accusations are thrown at him.

He breaks eye contact. Looking at his brother's shoulder rather than his face. Needing to keep an eye on those arms in case Knives moves to attack.

"I don't want to fight with you. We can be happy here. The boys could grow up happy here with their family."

"They aren't with their whole family, though, are they?"

And who scattered out family? But the retort dies on his tongue. A subconscious thought afraid his kids will be punished for speaking back.

"Please, I don't want to fight with you. Not when I was just offering to spend time with you. I'll stay with them and Cyril for lunch. Alright?"

"Good. Don't bring him back to this cabin," Knives retorts, his voice sharp.

He wants to protest. He doesn't want to put restrictions on when and where Cyril can see his sons.

There's something deep within him that remembers the way Cyril walked with that toy shoved up inside him when he misbehaved before.

"Yes, sir. I won't."

Knives is still for a moment before turning to leave the room. He seems to still be carrying frustration and anger, and puts distance between himself and Vash.

Though, not too much distance that he can't sense his brother and nephews.

The boys murmur and stare at the adults. Able to sense the tension, but too young to understand.

Vash heads towards where he can feel Cyril. Carefully putting away his stressed emotions and giving the boys his pretend happiness once more. "It's okay boys. Sometimes brothers fight is all." He chuckles and begins to help his sons feel happy again. "I'm sure you'll understand one day."

He doesn't deviate. He heads straight towards Cyril.

Cyril is making longer-term plans to stay in this town. That includes making a deal with the local leadership to allow the Inquisition to work here. They have to provide resources to justify the danger.

They also have to plan out routes for spies and soldiers that won't bring attention.

Towards the middle of an already long day, he feels so tempted to just return to Skyhold.

Vash can sense that Cyril's had a long day as he approaches.

Okay for a lunch break? He asks before he sees Cyril. To give him a chance to say he can't have a break before the boys see their father and get too excited.

Cyril seems relieved to sense Vash. Yes, he replies. Come in. You can have some of the food the cook here made for me that I haven't had a moment to touch.

Thanks. He wasn't hungry, but he didn't think Cyril would like to hear that. The boys will be glad to see you.

Vash is polite to any security that tries to stop him from seeing Cyril. Knowing they were just doing their job. Still, it's an utter relief once he finally sees Cyril's face again.
