Bad End Part 6 - Never let the pain stop

Things only continue to get worse. Vash continues to spiral and loose himself the more the mind breaking continues. The mages continue to use Cyril like he's nothing but a toy to use and throw away. Yet, any chance they have to have together the love Vash and Cyril share together stays strong. For now that remains unbroken. With every day only getting worse that will continue to be challenged.

Cyril tries to look Vash in the eye. He may be disappointed by the way Vash's eyes drift to the side towards Cyril's shoulder. He tries to do it slowly and not draw attention to it, but as he's looking for it, it will be easy for Cyril to spot.

"That may be so, but it would be good if they have kids to play with too. It can always be better than what we had."

"There are kids back home. They could play with the ones there when we go back."

"I thought you didn't want Cyril to be involved anymore. Isn't that what you just said?"

"I want him involved with the kids. I just don't want him dragged down by me anymore."

"Dragged down by you? What does that mean?"

"I'm making life harder for him again." It comes out harsher than he intends it to. "First it was you. Torturing him and sending the wolves after him because... because... I still don't really understand. Then it was those mages. Using him because they wanted me to make them more Plants and Cyril is the only one who could do so with me. Now? Now it's me. He's been through all that trauma and yet - the cause of it needs him to get up in the middle of the night and soothe him. When it should be the other way around." He speaks rapidly. All of this spilling form his mouth before he can think better of it and stop himself.

Knives lets Vash speak. He feels a little bit of anger but he's careful not to let it show, not wanting to upset the boys. He turns away from them though to focus entirely on Vash.

"Stop being so pathetic. He should be leaving with us and going back home. Then you wouldn't have to wake him up, he'd already be with you. It's him clinging to the role that makes him 'important' that's causing all this trouble.

And now you want to bring the boys out into the village? Think for more than two seconds, brother. Think about what's going to happen when they go back the second day to play and have outgrown all of their so-called friends? Do you think those people will still embrace them then? Or will word get out about the fast-growing boys and their strange, pathetic father?

You always do this. You act stupidly and selfishly. For once, think about your family and their future."

"Cyril is important! He could have changed the world for the better if not for the two of us!"

Although Knives does have a point about people and his sons. "Maybe they would. There are good people in this town. I don't want my sons to grow up scared and in hiding their whole lives."

"They shouldn't be scared, Vash. They should be cautious. Until they are strong enough to protect themselves, it's our job. And you've done a terrible job of it.

That's why you need me."

Vash opens his mouth to argue against that. Then he shuts his mouth and looks away. "I won't bring them into town."

"Good," Knives agrees.

"I don't mind you taking them to their father. They like being near him. But you can't let the humans near him."

"I still think them learning to socialize with humans is important."

Knives shakes his head. "It really isn't," he says finally. "We don't need them at all."

"Not today at least." He's trying to change the subject. "Let's work on their numbers today?"

Knives nods. He likes the distraction and he wants the boys to learn. He works on setting up structure for a lesson and spends the rest of the morning teaching them.

When it's lunch time, he lets Vash pack them up to take them back to Cyril.

"We're going to be good for Daddy today, right? Maybe walk for him?" Vash chats with his sons as he walks. Making his way to Cyril's home.

Making himself known to the guards the moment he comes across the first one.

Cyril is ready for Vash now. He's taken a bath and redone his make up. He looks good as he focuses on finishing up work. He looks up when Bull opens the door to let Vash in. Bull, for his part, doesn't seem particularly interested in letting Cyril out of his sight, but he does go out of the room to give the family some space.

He's probably just outside the door, though.

"Sorry about him," Cyril says with another practiced smile. "I think I really scared him. I'll have to be careful in the future."

"I'm sure Marikoth was worried too." The former slave has also been hovering a bit, but he's a bit more use to things he cares about being taken away suddenly. So he's been able to not be quite as upset as Bull is and give Cyril his space when required.

"But, I'll try to avoid making you feel like you need to check on me in the middle of the night again."

Cyril bites his lip and then nods. "If you think that's best," he says.

He moves then to put away his work and focus on his boys. He doesn't really want to talk about last night, and would much rather spend some time with the twins.

"I think we may be able to get them to walk today. If you'd like to try and encourage them with me?"

Cyril smiles and nods. "Let's try," he agrees.

He'll focus on that for a while, then. The boys do end up walking, and they get the hang of it pretty quickly. Cyril celebrates and encourages them to keep moving. Eventually, though, it's clear they are ready for an afternoon nap. Cyril has a crib in his office that Cassandra uses sometimes, so he lets the boys settle there. He watches over them as they snuggle up with each other and eventually fall asleep.

"They're so amazing." Vash says, voice full of love about his sons. "I might need to do some work in town and buy more cloth to make them some new clothes again."

"Yeah..." Cyril admits after a moment. Then he presses his lips together.

"I'll see about getting something together for them. I have some traders arriving soon to bring wares to the town. They should have something that will work."

"I don't mind trading what I can do in skills for goods. I don't think I have anything of value to trade."
